President Anura Kumara Dissanayake says no civilian should lose their life in wars, stressing that every human life is as precious as one’s own.
“We jealously guard our non-aligned policy while ensuring that humanitarian values and the saving of lives remain our top priority,” the President said in a post on X.
Highlighting the urgent need for peace, he warned that the world risks sliding into a severe global economic crisis, as societies across the globe face increasingly complex challenges.
“We call upon all parties to demonstrate a firm commitment to peace. As a state, Sri Lanka stands ready to support every step toward ending hostilities. All our actions are aimed at saving lives and ensuring that humanity prevails,” the President added.
The remarks come after Sri Lanka assisted in rescuing personnel aboard the Iranian naval vessel IRIS Dena, which was struck by a US submarine off the southern coast of the island.
Sri Lankan authorities are also making arrangements to assist another Iranian vessel, IRIS Bushehr, to dock at the Port of Trincomalee.
