Trade Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe has announced plans to introduce a registration system for online businesses and courier service providers in a bid to strengthen consumer protection.

Speaking at an event held to mark World Consumer Rights Day, the Minister said the initiative aims to ensure the quality and reliability of goods sold through online platforms.

He noted that the rapid expansion of online commerce has led to the rise of networks offering products at lower prices, but in some cases, consumers receive items that fail to meet expected standards.

“As online trade continues to grow, it is crucial to guarantee that consumers receive quality goods. We are closely monitoring instances where substandard products are being sold through online platforms,” he said.

Under the proposed system, all online sellers will be required to formally register, while courier service providers involved in product delivery will also come under regulatory oversight.
