Iran’s Supreme National Security Council has confirmed the death of its chief, Ali Larijani, following an Israeli airstrike.
In a statement issued Tuesday evening, the council said Larijani was killed alongside his son and bodyguards, describing him as a martyr who dedicated his life to the advancement of Iran and the Islamic Revolution.
Iran’s army chief, Amir Hatami, warned that the killing would be met with a “decisive and regrettable” response.
Earlier, Israel had announced that Larijani—considered a central figure in Iran’s political and security establishment—was killed in overnight strikes. His death marks one of the most significant losses for Iran since the killing of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei at the start of the conflict.
Meanwhile, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz stated that a separate strike had also killed the commander of Iran’s Basij paramilitary force, Gholamreza Soleimani, along with several other senior members. Iranian state media later confirmed Soleimani’s death.
Larijani’s killing is seen as a major blow to Iran’s leadership during a period of heightened crisis.
