Sri Lankan police have repatriated 125 individuals suspected of involvement in telecom fraud to China, according to the Ministry of Public Security.
Chinese state media Xinhua reported that the suspects were arrested during recent crackdown operations carried out in Sri Lanka. The repatriation was completed on March 29 with the assistance of the Chinese Embassy and law enforcement authorities from both countries.
The operation highlights strengthened cooperation between Sri Lankan and Chinese police in tackling cross-border telecom fraud. Authorities noted that increased collaboration was necessary following a rise in suspects relocating to Sri Lanka from other regions to continue illegal activities.
Sri Lankan police have recently intensified enforcement efforts, dismantling several fraud networks and arresting multiple suspects linked to telecom scams.
Officials from China’s Hubei Province, who were involved in the repatriation process, have launched further investigations into the cases.
The Ministry of Public Security stated that China will continue to enhance international law enforcement cooperation and work with other countries to build a more effective framework to combat transnational crime.
