Attempt to set up encroaching Buddhist shrine on Muslim land at Palamunai: Tension over popular opposition

Tensions were high in the Palamunai Mullimalai area under the Adalaichenai Pradeshiya Sabha in the Ampara district over a protest by a group of monks who were trying to set up a shrine on land owned by a Muslim.

Local Buddhist monks and some Sinhala youths have staged a protest against the installation of a Buddha statue on private land, falsely claiming to be land with ancient symbols.

According to the locals, some of the Sinhala youths who had been visiting the area for the past few days had been making arrangements for the installation of the statue.

In this case, the Buddhist monks and their entourage withdrew, after the dignitaries and the public expressed their strong opposition, showing the documents to the Buddhist monks who had come there to show that the place where the action was being taken to set up the shrine was privately owned and that the Buddhist shrine could not be set up at the site.
