United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Yemen Representative Philippe Duamelle announced that the total number of injured and dead children in the conflicts in Yemen in January and February is 47.
In a statement published on UNICEF’s website, Duamelle drew attention to the escalation of violence this year after the conflict intensified in 2021.
Stressing that as always, children suffer the most, Duamelle said that the reports show that at least 47 children were killed or injured in various parts of Yemen in the first two months of this year.
UNICEF Representative noted that since the beginning of the conflict in Yemen 7 years ago, the UN has documented that 10,200 children have been killed or injured, while the actual numbers are much higher.
Calling on the conflicting parties to protect civilians and ensure the safety and well-being of children, Duamelle stressed that the time has come for a sustainable political solution so that Yemenis and their children can live in the peace they deserve.
The Iranian-backed Houthis have been in control of the capital Sana and some regions in Yemen since September 2014.
The Yemeni government, on the other hand, has been supported by Saudi Arabian-led coalition forces since March 2015.
According to UN reports, from the outbreak of conflict until the end of 2021, 377,000 people died directly or indirectly due to the war in Yemen.
The humanitarian crisis, which has grown due to the civil war in Yemen, which is among the poorest countries in the world, has reached terrible dimensions.
Conflicts continue unabated in many parts of the country.
