Former MP and incumbent Samagi Vanitha Balawegaya (SVB) National Organiser Hirunika Premachandra – who led a protest over alleged harassment against women – and 14 other Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) supporters were arrested by the Cinnamon Gardens Police yesterday (November 14) afternoon.

The SVB, which is the women’s arm of the SJB, the main Parliamentary Opposition party, launched a protest march calling to end violence against women in view of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which is commemorated in November. While a group of protestors were staging a street drama in front of the United Nations’ Office in Colombo, some of them, who were wearing clothes resembling Security Forces uniforms, were taken into custody by the Cinnamon Gardens Police Station.

Later, a group of protestors including Premachandra launched a fresh protest in front of the Cinnamon Gardens Police Station demanding either the release of those who were detained or to take them (the protestors) into custody, which is when the Police arrested some of the protestors, including Hirunika.-TheMorning (NewsNow)
