To oppose the government’s proposed Anti-Terrorism Act, a hartal is now taking place in the North and East.
Several political parties, notably the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and Illankai Tamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK), as well as non-governmental organizations, have organized the hartal.
The planned Anti-Terrorism Act is being opposed, and the ongoing state-sponsored land grab in the North and East is being brought to light, according to TNA Batticaloa District MP Shanakiyan Rasamanickam.
Public transit has also been suspended in various areas of the North and East, including Jaffna, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Mannar, and Mullaitivu. All businesses and schools have shut down in support of the hartal.
