On Tuesday (25), Sri Lanka received the ceremonial keys to the eight-story outpatient building project of the Colombo National Hospital, which was constructed with Chinese aid.

During a ceremony yesterday, Qi Zhenhong, the Chinese ambassador to Sri Lanka, presented the building to Keheliya Rambukwella, the minister of health.

The documents for the handover and other documents pertaining to the medications and medical equipment that China would send throughout this year were signed by the Chinese Ambassador and Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella on behalf of the two parties.

The hospital’s daily patient handling capacity would increase to 6,000 with the building of the project, which would cost 80 million USD and cover an area of roughly 50,000 square meters, substantially easing the load on the region’s medical resources.

The outpatient building is a significant and desperately needed initiative for the nation’s healthcare system, according to Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, who expressed appreciation for China’s long-term support.

He continued by saying that in his opinion, the nation’s medical specialists will use it to the people’s greatest advantage, greatly benefiting them.

As reported in Chinese media According to Xinhua, Chinese Ambassador Qi Zhenhong noted that the Chinese government has given the health sector priority in the development of bilateral relations and that China has given Sri Lanka medical supplies and vaccinations during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The envoy also mentioned that China had sent emergency medical supplies to Sri Lanka in the hopes that its efforts will benefit patients and front-line medical personnel directly.
