According to Ali Sabry, the minister of foreign affairs, the first group of Sri Lankan citizens has been successfully evacuated from the crisis-stricken Sudan on Wednesday (26).

The group was evacuated to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where they were received by the Acting Consulate General of the Sri Lankan Consulate General in Jeddah, according to Minister Sabry on Twitter.

Minister Ali Sabry expressed his appreciation to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for helping to ensure the citizens of Sri Lanka could leave Sudan safely.

The evacuation follows violence between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan that began on April 15 and resulted in at least 400 fatalities.

Foreign Minister Ali Sabry commented on the situation in Sudan yesterday, saying that Sri Lanka is actively striving to ensure the safe emigration of its residents from Sudan and that it has been closely monitoring the circumstance of Sri Lankans there.

The safe removal of Sri Lankans from Sudan is possible within the next several days, according to Minister Sabry.
