Today (April 26), exchange notes for the provision of project support totaling Japanese Yen 53 million (roughly LKR 1.3 billion) through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to improve infectious waste management in Sri Lankan government hospitals were signed.
By putting medical waste incinerators in a few public hospitals, the Project hopes to improve the management of infectious waste while lowering health risks. 15 hospitals have been chosen to install incinerators that will cover all of Sri Lanka’s provinces in order to accomplish the aforementioned goal.
A total of 15 incinerators in two capacities with LP Gas burners, automatic temperature control systems, and compliance with environmental standards will be made available as part of the project, along with the necessary technical support for the Ministry of Health’s Training of Trainers (TOT) program to maintain the system once the equipment has been installed.
As a result, His Excellency MIZUKOSHI Hideaki, the Government of Japan’s Ambassador to Sri Lanka, and K.M. Mahinda Siriwardana, Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Economic Stabilization and National Policies, on behalf of the government of Sri Lanka, signed the relevant Exchange Notes related to the grant, and the Grant Agreement was signed by YAMADA Tets and the same two individuals.
