The government has considered removing the cap on egg prices at retail (MRP).

At a meeting held in the Prime Minister’s Office, this proposal was discussed with the participation of the relevant officials, egg producers, and poultry farmers.

The Presidential Secretary and the secretaries for the Ministries of Agriculture and Trade presided over the meeting.

The current shortfall in the local market may be rectified in just 15 days, according to egg producers and poultry farmers, if actions are done to eliminate the maximum retail price imposed on eggs.

In response, they were informed by Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera that he would think about shortly presenting a proposal to the Cabinet of Ministers asking for the abolition of MRP on eggs.
