Landslide early warnings were issued today by the National Building Research Organization (NBRO) for a number of locations in the districts of Badulla, Matara, and Kegalle.
As a result, the following regions have received a Level 1 (Yellow) warning:
Badulla district – Haldummulla and Passara Divisional Secretariat divisions
Matara district – Kotapola and Pasgoda Divisional Secretariat divisions
Kegalle district – Kegalle Divisional Secretariat division
People in the aforementioned region have been asked to be aware about the likelihood of landslides, slope failures, rock falls, cutting failures, and ground subsidence because the amount of rain that has fallen in the last 24 hours has exceeded 75 mm.
The Department of Meteorology, meanwhile, issued a warning that the island’s current showery weather is likely to persist for the foreseeable future.
As a result, the weather prediction predicts that most of the island will see showers or thundershowers after 1 PM.
Coastal regions of the Western and Southern provinces, as well as Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mannar, and Puttalam districts, may get showers in the morning.
In certain areas of the Eastern and Uva provinces, as well as the Polonnaruwa district, moderately heavy rains of around 100 mm are anticipated.
Over the island, there may be some locations with moderately heavy showers that exceed 75 mm.
The general public is recommended to take appropriate safety measures to reduce damages brought on by lightning and transitory, localized high winds during thundershowers.
