According to the Department of Meteorology, the depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal is quite likely to travel northwest today.
The depression will become a cyclonic storm over the southeast Bay of Bengal in the next days, followed by a severe cyclonic storm across the southeast and adjacent central Bay of Bengal, according to the department.
Until further notice, it has been suggested that naval and multi-day fishing communities stay out of the marine zones defined by 02N – 15N and between 85E – 100E.
The agency said that there would occasionally be showers or thundershowers in the maritime areas surrounding the island.
Over the sea region around the island, winds will be westerly or south-westerly with a speed of 25–35 kmph.
The wind speed off the coast of Colombo to Hambanthota via Galle and Matara may occasionally reach 45 to 55 kmph.
It will occasionally be rather rough in the sea areas along the coast running from Colombo to Hambanthota via Galle and Matara. The other marine regions in the vicinity of the island will be calm.
Thundershowers can cause very turbulent waves and very powerful gusty gusts.
