Government workers must now use fingerprint scanners to record their attendance as of today, May 15.
The relevant circular was released on May 12 and had the signature of K.D. N. Ranjith Asoka, Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils, and Local Government.
According to the Ministry, the Covid pandemic scenario caused a temporary halt to the use of fingerprint scanners in recent years.
However, fingerprinting is now required once again after it was discovered that some employees were abusing the system by reporting their arrival time as 8 a.m. even though they actually got at work at 10 a.m.
This practice has apparently been used to gain overtime pay by several government officials, and it is said to be particularly prevalent in the Ministry of Health.
As a result, starting today, all government personnel must utilize fingerprint machines in order to stop these fraudulent activities.
