According to the Immigration and Emigration Controller General, Harsha Ilukpitiya, the creation of an online passport application system is part of President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s ambition to digital public services.
According to Harsha Ilukpitiya, this new procedure intends to simplify the passport application procedure and make sure that passports are delivered to applicants’ houses within a three-day period.
The Presidential Media Division (PMD) claims that during his participation on the PMD-produced show “101 Katha,” Harsha Ilukpitiya emphasized the advancement of this process and its widespread accessibility.
50 regional secretariats on the island have been furnished with the tools necessary to enable the quick distribution of passports. The passport will be sent to the applicant’s home through courier service in three days after they have submitted their pertinent applications to the nearby Regional Secretariat and finished the necessary steps.
This project was started in response to complaints that brokers were interfering with the passport-issuing procedure. In order to stop this meddling, the Minister of Public Security, Tiran Alles, gave the Immigration and Emigration Department orders to create a novel scheme.
The department aims to popularize this newly designed program during the month of June, marking a significant milestone in its history. Achieving a successful execution of this program during the department’s 75th anniversary next year would be a remarkable accomplishment.
Under the new system, individuals can conveniently apply for passports from their homes by visiting www.immigration.gov.lk, selecting the ‘Apply for passports’ option and validating the provided information, applicants will receive the necessary application form. Before uploading the soft copy of the form, applicants can specify whether they prefer the expedited ’03 day service’ or the standard ’02 week service.’
