After completing the necessary bail conditions, stand-up comedian Nathasha Edirisooriya, who was detained after making some contentious remarks during a comedy concert, was freed on bail today (06 July).

The Colombo High Court granted Edirisooriya bail on Wednesday (05 July), however he was released today after posting a personal bail of Rs. 100,000.

The female comedian was consequently freed 39 days after her detention on May 28.

Judge Aditya Patabendi of the Colombo High Court ordered her release after ruling that Edirisooriya could not be charged in accordance with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

As a result of the comments she made during her performance at a recent stand-up comedy concert held at a prestigious school in Colombo, Edirisooriya found herself in hot water. It was said that she insulted a number of religions.

On May 28, as she attempted to board a flight out of the country, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) detained her at Katunayake’s Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA).
