According to reports, a father and son from Sri Lanka perished at Trebbia, Italy.
The catastrophe reportedly occurred on the afternoon of Saturday, July 8, under the Donceto bridge, close to Rondanera beach, in front of a large crowd of bathers who had gathered on the riverbanks.
Lesly Kilaster Tisera Warnakulasuriya and Dulaj Nilanjan Tisera Warnakulasuriya, a father and son who were living in Piacenza and were 59 and 28 years old and hailed from Sri Lanka, have been identified as the victims.
When the two swimmers’ disappearance was reported at around 4:30 pm, the alarm was set up.
The “Drago” firefighters’ helicopter, which was used to rescue the two victims from the waters of the Trebbia, arrived on the scene with the team of divers from Bologna and the firefighters from Bobbio.
Additionally present were the 118 Bobbio health staff and the Rivergaro Carabinieri.
At the road viaduct, where a hole at least three meters deep forms and whirlpools and currents are generated, the drowning happened at the height of the waterfall, a place that can be quite dangerous for those who decide to take a bath.
The boy would have encountered trouble first, and the father would have flung himself to try to save him, according to an initial reconstruction; sadly, by the time help arrived, they had already drowned.
