The new bill for the modernisation of the Department of Posts will be presented to the Parliament by the end of this year, according to State Minister of Mass Media Shantha Bandara.

The State Minister noted that since the current Post Office Ordinance hinders the renovation activities of the post, it has been decided to amend it immediately and that 80% of its work has already been finished. The press conference was held at the Presidential Media Centre and was titled “Towards a stable country – all in one direction.”

“We intend to introduce and approve the new postal bill through the legislature this year, after which work on the issue will continue. One of the state-run organisations that is now losing money is the postal service, he continued.

In the meantime, Bandara stated that the postal department’s income by December 31, 2022, was Rs. 7,000 million, while the costs incurred were Rs. 14,000 million. He also stated that they were given the order to put in place the appropriate measures to make up the Rs. 7,000 million in losses.

We anticipate cutting losses to Rs. 4,000 million by this year and striking a profit-loss balance by December 2024, he emphasised.
