Today (09 August), the Supreme Court rejected a Fundamental Rights (FR) petition that was submitted in an effort to get a ruling barring the government from forgiving loans taken out of the EPF and ETF funds during the domestic debt restructuring process.
Attorney-at-Law Sunil Watagala filed the pertinent petition on behalf of the Inter-Company Employees’ Union, its president Wasantha Samarasinghe, and six other individuals. He asked the court to issue a restraining order against the government’s ability to waive the loans obtained from the EPF and ETF during the domestic debt optimisation process.
