According to information released by the Committee on Public Accounts (COPA), a failed initiative to build a radar system provided by the World Meteorological Organisation in the Gongala area cost the government Rs. 78 million.
This was revealed when Department of Meteorology (DOM) representatives testified earlier this week at the COPA meeting, which was presided over by State Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna. They were there to discuss the auditor general’s report and the current performance for the years 2019, 2020, and 2021.
Approximately Rs. 402 million had been spent on the aforementioned radar system through this project that was put into place in 2008, and Rs. 323 million had been donated by the World Meteorological Organisation.
