Former CID Director Shani Abeysekara and Sub-Inspector Sugath Mendis have been released from the proceedings in a case involving the former DIG Vaas Gunawardena before the Gampaha Magistrate’s Court.
Despite protests from the Colombo Crimes Division, the Gampaha Magistrate today released all four suspects, according to media, following submissions made by the Attorney General’s Department and counsel on behalf of the suspects.
In the case against the former DIG Vaas Gunawardena, his son, and four other police officers, Shani Abeysekara, the former senior superintendent of police who oversaw the CID, is charged with forging evidence.
