According to the State Trade Corporation (STC), the government would keep importing eggs because doing so helped to alleviate the shortage on the local market.
According to its chairman Asiri Walisundara, the STC has moved to import egg consignments in accordance with a Cabinet resolution in order to meet the daily requirement of 1 million eggs.
According to him, the STC has obtained authorization to import eggs for the ensuing three months.
In an effort to solve the scarcity on the local market, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the import of eggs from India earlier this year.
