According to the Department of Railways, the ongoing strike action by the Locomotive Operating Engineers’ Union has so far today resulted in the cancellation of a total of 13 scheduled trains.
Despite the continued trade union protest, at least 50 trains, including night mail trains headed for Colombo, were running this morning, according to Deputy General Manager of Railways (Traffic) M.J. Indipolage.
Since Monday (Sept. 11) at midnight, the locomotive operating engineers have been on strike in support of a number of important demands, including changes to the hiring and promotion procedures.
More than 100 train trips were cancelled yesterday after locomotive operating engineers withdrew from their responsibilities, severely impacting commuters.
