Early childhood education will be made mandatory for all children once they reach the age of four, according to Education Minister Susil Premajayantha. Sri Lanka will become one of the few nations in the world to offer free education and will further expand its free educational opportunities from the first year to university.

When necessary, early childhood development centres can be conducted in primary schools when space is available. The government will step in on behalf of children who cannot afford it.

According to him, this will also be a solution for schools who are struggling with closure.

He added that the formal early childhood development of children in this nation is the most important prerequisite for the achievement of educational transformative reforms.
