Another petition opposing the new Online Safety Bill has been submitted to the Supreme Court.

Ranjith Madduma Bandara, the general secretary of Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), Rehan Jayawickrema, and Prof. G.L. Peiris, a member of the Freedom People’s Congress (FPC), submitted the petition today (Oct. 4), designating the Attorney General as the petition’s respondent.

The petitioners note that the Bill, which was introduced to parliament yesterday (October 3), was published in the government gazette on September 18 and infringes the fundamental rights of the populace.

Concerns have been raised concerning the Bill giving the Online Safety Commission the authority to decide on citizens’ rights and issue orders to people without a hearing.
