In some of the low-lying sections of the Nilwala River valley in the Kotapola, Pitabeddara, Akuressa, Pasgoda, Athuraliya, Malimbada, Thihagoda, Matara, and Devinuwara divisional secretariat divisions, the Irrigation Department has issued a “Amber” color flood warning.
The Nilwala River Basin’s Upstream and Middle Reach catchment areas have seen significant rainfall as of 2 a.m. today (23), according to the flood warning bulletin, which is in effect until 8 a.m. tomorrow (24).
In some low-lying areas of the Nilwala River valley located in the Kotapola, Pitabeddara, Akuressa, Pasgoda, Athuraliya, Malimbada, Thihagoda, Matara, and Devinuwara DS Divisions, there is a possibility of a significant flood situation occurring, according to an analysis of the current rainfall situation and river water levels of Hydrological Stations in the Nilwala River.
Residents of those locations and motorists passing through such areas are urged to take this matter seriously.
The Disaster Management Authorities are urged to take the necessary safety measures in the interim.
