The police in Sri Lanka will take severe measures against run-down buses and vans that are used to carry students to and from school.

The statement was given by Chief ASP Manoj Ranagala of the Police Traffic Unit during a media conference on Wednesday, October 26.

He claimed that the aforementioned vehicles had been examined as part of a survey that was carried out with the help of multiple Deputy Inspector Generals (DIG).

According to ASP Ranagala, it was discovered that the majority of buses used for school transport were previously withdrawn from passenger operation because they were in unfit condition.

ASP Ranagala stated that as the vans utilised for school services are also the same, severe action should be done because of the extremely inadequate upkeep.

Prohibition orders were issued in this regard after a survey was out with the help of vehicle inspectors, he said.

ASP Ranagala emphasised that this was a significant problem and that the absence of safety precautions results in the loss of innocent life.
