The Department of Government Information (DGI) stated that the Cabinet of Ministers has approved a three-monthly revision to the power pricing.

According to the requirements of the Sri Lanka Electricity Act No. 20 of 2009, the minister in charge of electricity is empowered to write general policy guidelines for the supply of electricity, subject to the Cabinet of Ministers’ approval.

Consequently, the evaluation of power rates is carried out every six months in accordance with the basic rules already in place.

However, the Cabinet of Ministers has approved the joint proposal provided by the President in his capacity as the Minister of Finance, Economic Stabilisation and National Policies with the Minister of Power & Energy to revise the relevant review period to three (03) months, taking into account the inconveniences the public must endure as a result of acting in accordance with it.

Therefore, permission was also given to carry out the Ceylon Electricity Board’s (CEB) power dispatch audit and, with the Department of Meteorology’s help, improve the hydroelectricity forecast in order to amend the currently in place general policy guidelines.
