17 Sri Lankans have been allowed to escape the war-torn Palestinian enclave and enter Egypt through the Rafah border crossing. The party was caught in the Gaza Strip during the Israel-Hamas fighting.

This has been formally communicated to the Foreign Employment Bureau (SLBFE) by the Sri Lankan Embassy in Tel Aviv.

As a result, SLBFE media spokesman Gamini Senarath stated during a special media conference this morning (Nov. 02) that 15 of these Sri Lankans are anticipated to arrive in Egypt this afternoon.

Mr. Senarath went on to say that in order to help with the evacuation of Sri Lankans who are stuck in Gaza, the Representative Office of Sri Lanka in Palestine and the Sri Lankan Embassy in Israel are collaborating.

Citing Nimal Bandara, the ambassador of Sri Lanka to Israel, Mr. Senarath further stated that the man from Sri Lanka, who has been missing since Hamas’s surprise attack earlier this month, is believed to be one of the captives being held by the Islamic militant group.

Following October 07, when Hamas militants poured into neighbouring Israeli cities from the blockaded Gaza Strip to launch an unprecedented attack, the 48-year-old father of two was reported missing.

According to the SLBFE representative, quick action is being done to enable Bandara’s prompt release.
