Sri Lanka, South Korea to further enhance trade and investment collaborations

President Yoon Suk Yeol of the Republic of Korea has conveyed his profound gratitude for the productive talks he had with President Ranil Wickremesinghe in a noteworthy diplomatic interaction.

According to the President’s Media Division (PMD), their meeting was held on September 18 as part of the High-level Meetings of the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

The meeting was praised by President Yoon Suk Yeol as an important step in strengthening the two countries’ bilateral relations. As soon as he got back to Korea, he gave the pertinent ministries orders to carry out the large-scale cooperation initiatives that had been discussed during the conference.

Additionally, they made the decision to strengthen their partnership in trade and investment by utilising the Trade and Investment Promotion Framework (TIPF).

President Wickremesinghe’s statement regarding the significance of fortifying bilateral ties during a period when the Republic of Korea is augmenting its presence in the Indo-Pacific area was particularly noteworthy.

President Yoon Suk Yeol expressed his eagerness to meet with President Wickremesinghe again soon and promised to keep up his efforts to strengthen these important ties.

President Yoon Suk Yeol concluded by expressing his best wishes for President Wickremesinghe’s continuous well-being and reiterating their shared dedication to fostering their nations’ friendship and cooperation.

In the meantime, State Minister Janka Wakkambura disclosed during a press conference on Wednesday, November 2, at the Presidential Media Centre (PMC) that a project related to the processing of solid waste and sanitary landfill is scheduled to start in January 2024, with funding support from the Korean Government.

The State Minister stated, “This project aims to address the waste management challenges faced by all local government bodies, as well as the districts of Badulla and Vavuniya.”
