The All-Island Federation of Grama Niladhari Officers has made the decision to step away from the ongoing housing and population census, which got underway on Wednesday, November 1, until they receive adequate compensation for their labour.
However, the secretary of the group, Jagath Chandralal, charged that the Department of Census and Statistics and the authorities had been acting arbitrarily concerning the allowances given to Grama Niladhari personnel.
The secretary of the federation further underlined that the mapping activities—the first stage of the census—have already been finished.
The Presidential Secretariat in Colombo hosted the opening of the 15th Population and Housing Census, which is carried out every ten years and is the first building catalogue in the decennial census.
