The public has been asked to exercise caution around potentially lethal reef fish that can be found in Sri Lanka’s shallow waters.

There have been multiple stories recently of persons getting stung by reef fish and being admitted to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital.

Dr. Janaka Ruben, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Parasitology, states that the toxic fish species is known as “Gonmaha-Stone Fish.”

In an interview with reporters, Dr. Ruben added that at low tide, the stonefish can be found in small pools, shallow lagoons, and sandy or rubble regions of reef flats.

Because the fish move slowly, they are primarily concealed and occasionally covered with algae, he said.
