In response to claims made by the Minister of Sports in Parliament concerning the removal of USD 2 million from its accounts, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has released a statement providing clarification.

The SLC flatly refuted any attempt to move money from its accounts to accounts belonging to other people.

In response, the Sri Lanka Cricket Association (SLC) stated that, in its capacity as the country’s governing body, it receives sponsorship income and monies in US dollars, which it purposefully keeps in US dollars to take advantage of swings in the currency rate.

But it’s crucial to remember that the SLC must continue to run its business in Sri Lanka and consistently pay its debts to suppliers and other stakeholders. SLC transfers money from its USD account to its local currency (LKR) accounts in order to cover these costs. This has been the standard procedure for a long time because SLC does not make a sizable amount of money in local currency. It is important to emphasise that there has been no attempt to remove money from SLC’s accounts; these transfers are purely operational in nature.

Therefore, it is untrue and factually inaccurate to assert that SLC is attempting to move money out of its accounts. The cricket administration stated, “It is obvious that such claims have been made with ulterior motives, aiming to create needless public unrest against SLC.”

According to the SLC, it follows the requirements of its constitution, which forbids cash payments of more than Rs. 10,000.
