During his 2024 Budget Speech today, President Ranil Wickremesinghe announced an increase in 2024 allowances for the elderly and those with kidney disease.

As a result, the Head of the State underlined that by the following year, each person with kidney disease will receive a monthly allowance of up to Rs. 7,500 instead of the present Rs. 5,000.

He said, “This is almost a 50% increment.”

130,000 beneficiaries are currently receiving the applicable allowances, as the President stated.

In the meantime, Wickremesinghe suggested raising the monthly allowance given to senior citizens to Rs. 3,000 in 2024 through the 2024 budget. An old person currently receives payment of Rs. 2,000.

In addition to stating that 530,000 recipients currently receive the senior citizens’ stipend, the President promised to take steps to ensure that those on waiting lists are added to the beneficiary lists by the next year.

The President claims that a total of Rs. 138 billion has been set aside for this purpose.

Furthermore, Wickremesinghe said that up to Rs. 205 billion would be spent on “Aswesuma” welfare payments, allowances for the aged, disabled, and kidney patients. Says Wickremesinghe
