During the 42nd General Conference of the intergovernmental organisation on Wednesday (15) in Paris, Sri Lanka was elected to the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) for the term 2023–2027.

With 144 votes out of 188 member states casting ballots in the election, Sri Lanka tied Bangladesh for third place in the region, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Six of the nine candidates from the Asia-Pacific region were chosen by the UNESCO member states to serve on the Executive Board of the organisation. The other nations in the area to be elected are Australia, Pakistan, Indonesia, Bangladesh, and the Republic of Korea. It further said that Sri Lanka’s tenure on the Executive Board ended in 2019.

Through fostering worldwide collaboration in the fields of education, research, culture, communication, and information, UNESCO promotes peace and security. Additionally, it helps to meet the Sustainable Development Goals. The fact that Sri Lanka joined UNESCO in 1949, not long after gaining independence, is evidence of the nation’s steadfast adherence to the organization’s values and principles, which encourage international cooperation through science, education, and culture in order to advance respect for justice, the rule of law, and the fundamental freedoms of all peoples.
