The Department of Meteorology has issued a weather alert for Sri Lanka, forecasting showers in various regions throughout the day.

According to the latest updates, the Eastern and Uva provinces are expected to experience several spells of showers. Additionally, showers or thundershowers are anticipated in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in the Nuwara-Eliya, Galle, and Matara districts, particularly after 2:00 p.m.

Residents should also be prepared for fairly strong winds, reaching speeds of about 30-40 kmph at times, particularly in the eastern slopes of the central hills and across several provinces including the Northern, North-Central, Southern, North-Western, Uva, and Eastern regions.

Misty conditions may prevail in some areas of the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in the Galle and Matara districts during the morning hours.

Furthermore, maritime activities may be affected, with showers or thundershowers expected in certain sea areas off the coast from Trincomalee to Pottuvil via Batticaloa. The wind direction is predicted to be north-easterly, with speeds ranging between 25-35 kmph. However, wind speeds could escalate to 55-60 kmph intermittently in sea areas extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota, and from Colombo to Kankasanthurai via Puttalam.

Mariners are advised to exercise caution as rough sea conditions are expected in the areas mentioned above, while sea conditions around the rest of the island will be generally slight to moderate.

As weather conditions may change rapidly, the public is urged to stay updated with the latest forecasts and take necessary precautions to ensure safety.
