The Sri Lanka Committee for Solidarity with Palestine (SLCSP) has welcomed with great happiness and relief the ceasefire in Gaza, which comes after 476 days of Israel’s devastating military campaign. The conflict has resulted in the tragic loss of more than 46,000 Palestinian lives, including approximately 20,000 children.
In a statement, the SLCSP expressed hope that the truce, although fragile and fraught with uncertainties, will bring an end to the long-standing suffering of the Palestinian people. They emphasized the need for a permanent solution to the more than century-old settler colonial issue, which they trace back to the Balfour Declaration.
However, the SLCSP notes that the end of the war does not mean the end of the conflict.
The SLCSP urged the international community to seize this opportunity to intensify efforts towards a lasting and just resolution. They stressed the importance of establishing an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, which they believe is crucial to ensuring lasting peace in the region.
