The Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) has released the Global Terrorism Index (GTI) 2025, ranking Sri Lanka 100th with a score of zero, classifying it as a country with “no impact” of terrorism.

This marks a significant improvement for Sri Lanka, which dropped 64 spots in just one year, reducing its risk of terror threats. The index evaluates 163 countries, covering 99.7% of the world’s population, based on terrorist incidents, casualties, and material damage.

Despite South Asia remaining the most affected region for over a decade, the report notes a decline in terrorism across Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. Bhutan and Sri Lanka are the only two South Asian nations with a GTI score of zero, indicating no terrorist attacks in the past five years.

Meanwhile, Pakistan ranked second globally with a score of 8.374, followed by Afghanistan (9th, 7.262) and India (14th, 6.411).

The GTI 2025 underscores a gradual decline in terrorism across South Asia, offering a hopeful outlook for the region’s stability.
