The Israeli government is set to expand employment opportunities for Sri Lankan workers, according to assurances given by the newly appointed Israeli Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Mr. Reuven Azar, during a meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs, Overseas Employment and Tourism, Vijith Herath.

Ambassador Azar, who officially presented his credentials on Thursday (May 15), held bilateral discussions with Minister Herath at the Ministry yesterday. The meeting covered a range of topics of mutual interest, including economic cooperation, security, and employment prospects.

Highlighting the significant contribution of Sri Lankan workers in Israel, the Ambassador stated that a considerable number of Sri Lankans are currently employed in various sectors across the country. He added that the Israeli government is actively working to increase employment opportunities for Sri Lankan nationals.

In response, Minister Herath urged the Ambassador to convey a special request to the Israeli authorities — to grant amnesty to Sri Lankan workers who have overstayed their visas and are currently facing hardships. He appealed for these individuals to be integrated into the workforce rather than subjected to legal action.

Ambassador Azar responded positively and assured Minister Herath that he would immediately communicate this request to the Israeli government.
