Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon, who was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) over the May 9, 2022 attack on “Aragalaya” protesters at Galle Face, was granted bail today.
Colombo Fort Magistrate Nilupuli Lankapura ordered Tennakoon’s release on two surety bails of Rs. 1 million each, while also imposing a travel ban. The Magistrate further instructed him not to influence witnesses and to fully cooperate with the CID and court during the investigation.
It was also clarified in court that Tennakoon is listed as the 37th suspect in the case, and not the 33rd as previously reported. The 33rd suspect has been identified as Liyanad Mendis.
Tennakoon, who was produced before court via Zoom from Dumbara Prison, was warned that failure to appear when summoned would result in the cancellation of his bail. The case is scheduled to be taken up again on September 3.
