The National Shoora Council (NSC) has called on the United Nations to suspend Israel’s membership until Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is surrendered to the International Criminal Court (ICC), while also urging the UN to grant full membership to Palestine.

In a strongly worded letter dated 14 September 2025 to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the NSC said Israel must face accountability for “unpardonable crimes” committed against Palestinians over more than a century, and for its recent airstrike in Qatar targeting Hamas peace negotiators.

The NSC accused Israel of genocide, territorial expansionism, and destabilizing the Middle East. The Council further warned that Israel’s widening attacks on seven Arab countries would escalate global oil prices, severely impacting countries like Sri Lanka that are dependent on Middle Eastern energy supplies.

The organization criticized what it described as the UN’s helplessness in restraining Israel, while accusing the United States of remaining silent during Israel’s air strike in Qatar despite maintaining its largest military base there.

The NSC also highlighted the historical context of Palestine’s exclusion from UN membership in 1948, while Israel was admitted as a full member, calling it a grave injustice.

The Council further rejected the labeling of Hamas as a terrorist group, describing its actions as part of the Palestinian struggle against foreign colonial occupation, and condemned Israel’s attacks on Qatari soil as “horrible acts of state terror.”

The letter concluded by urging the UN to amend its Charter if necessary to ensure both Palestine’s recognition and Israel’s accountability at the international level.
