The construction of the Kadawatha to Mirigama section of the Central Expressway officially resumed today (17) under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

As part of the recommencement, work has begun on the Kadawatha Interchange and the initial 500-meter stretch of the expressway. The government has allocated Rs. 8.6 billion to fund the project.

Work on this 37-kilometer section was suspended in mid-2022 due to the suspension of credit facilities amidst the economic crisis. However, the Export-Import Bank of China has now approved a Yuan-denominated loan equivalent to USD 500 million, enabling the resumption.

The project is scheduled for full completion by mid-2028.
