Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe today urged opposition parties to unite in a collective struggle against what he described as the government’s attempt to establish a “constitutional dictatorship” in Sri Lanka.

Speaking at a political convention, Wickremesinghe called for the organisation of 1,000 joint opposition rallies, satyagrahas, and protests across the country.

“We have heard calls from various opposition politicians for a united struggle. Today’s convention marks the beginning of that collective effort,” he said.

He further stressed the importance of mass mobilisation, adding:
“Let us organise 1,000 joint rallies. Let us also hold satyagrahas. I know some of you are experienced in leading Paada Yatras. So let us unite and stand together against this constitutional dictatorship.”

Wickremesinghe’s call comes amid growing opposition criticism of the government’s handling of constitutional reforms and governance.
