Russia has expressed its readiness to cooperate with Sri Lanka in the development of nuclear energy and other energy projects, as part of strengthening bilateral ties.
The proposal was outlined by Levan Dzhagaryan, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, during the Ambassador’s Roundtable organised by the Pathfinder Foundation yesterday.
Ambassador Dzhagaryan said that discussions have already been held with the Ministry of Energy, with proposals submitted for possible collaboration. “We are prepared to move forward if the Government of Sri Lanka is ready. This is a sovereign decision,” he stated, stressing Moscow’s support for Colombo’s energy diversification efforts.
Underscoring Russia’s approach, the envoy added: “We do not interfere in your domestic affairs. Unlike some countries, we respect your legitimate right to cooperate with any partner.”
Beyond energy, the Ambassador highlighted opportunities for broader cooperation, including trade in national currencies with India, Brazil, and other partners, as well as cultural exchanges, citing Sri Lanka’s participation in a recent Buddhist forum in Russia. A Russian delegation is expected in Colombo in mid-October to deepen people-to-people relations.
Tourism was another key area discussed. While more than 200,000 Russian tourists visited Sri Lanka last year, Ambassador Dzhagaryan noted that numbers could grow further if issues such as high costs, limited payment facilities, and lack of direct air connectivity are addressed.
