Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya told Parliament today that the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) Chairman had issued a letter concerning LGBTQ tourism without prior consultation with the political authority.
Responding to a question raised by SJB MP Kavinda Jayawardane, the Prime Minister said the relevant Minister had since advised the SLTDA Chairman on the government’s official stance and policy regarding the issue.
She clarified that the government will not promote or grant special privileges to any particular group, adding that such sensitive matters should not be used for political gain.
The statement follows public debate over a letter reportedly issued by the SLTDA promoting LGBTQ tourism, which drew criticism from several quarters.
