Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10 on October 14, meaning millions of computers will no longer receive security updates or technical support, increasing their risk of cyberattacks.

Users are encouraged to upgrade to Windows 11 for free, though many older PCs may not be compatible. Alternatively, users can subscribe to Extended Security Updates (ESU) until October 2026, for a fee of $30 or 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points.

Consumer groups, including the U.S. PIRG, have criticized the move, warning it could lead to unnecessary electronic waste as people are forced to buy new computers.

Windows 10 currently powers around 43% of the world’s 1.4 billion Windows devices, according to Statcounter.
