Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa has appealed to Sri Lankan specialist doctors working overseas to return home, citing a pressing shortage of medical professionals within the country’s health sector.

During his official visit to the United Kingdom, Dr. Jayatissa participated in a meeting organized by the Sri Lankan High Commission, where he engaged with Sri Lankan doctors residing in the UK.

Addressing the gathering, the Minister emphasized the urgent need for experienced medical specialists to strengthen the national health service and ensure the continued delivery of quality healthcare.

“I made a special request to our specialist doctors who have left the country for various reasons to consider returning to Sri Lanka. There is currently a shortage of specialist doctors in our health service,” Dr. Jayatissa said.

He further assured that returning doctors would be reinstated in their previous positions with full recognition of their prior service benefits.

The appeal comes amid ongoing efforts by the Health Ministry to address workforce shortages and enhance the quality and accessibility of healthcare across Sri Lanka.
