Minister of Sports Sunil Kumara Gamage says discussions are underway with the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding the administration of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), with the possibility of appointing an interim committee or an authorised official under consideration.

Addressing the media today, the Minister revealed that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is directly involved in the ongoing discussions.

“We have already prepared a plan to develop the sport of cricket in Sri Lanka and to enable victories. Some parts of this plan have already been completed. As the government, we will step in to improve the sport by implementing this plan. It is our responsibility to ensure the development of cricket. We cannot leave it in the hands of another entity or individual. This is the government’s responsibility, and we will work towards it,” he said.

Minister Gamage further noted that several measures are being taken, including continued dialogue with the ICC.

“We have no reason to suspend cricket in Sri Lanka. We must protect and develop the sport simultaneously. We will definitely intervene to make the necessary changes,” he added.

Responding to a journalist’s question on whether SLC’s administration would be handed over to an interim committee or an authorised official, the Minister said discussions are ongoing and a final decision will be made soon.

“The President is also directly involved in these discussions. Within the next week or two, we will decide on a suitable system,” he said.

The Sports Minister emphasised that both the government and the President are committed to improving the standard and governance of cricket in Sri Lanka.
