Renovation work has officially commenced at the historic Colombo Fort Railway Station today (09), marking the start of a major modernization drive under the Colombo Suburban Railway Project (CSRP).
The initiative aims to preserve the station’s 109-year-old heritage while introducing modern facilities to improve passenger experience.
Deputy Minister Prasanna Gunesena stated that the project is expected to be completed within 15 months at a cost of Rs. 2,162.64 million, with funding provided by the Asian Development Bank and the Government of Sri Lanka.
He noted that the upgrades will enhance convenience for commuters while protecting the station’s historical and archaeological significance.
The first phase of the project will include the construction of modern passenger bridges equipped with elevators and escalators, replacing existing structures at the Maradana and Slave Island ends. A new three-storey service building will also be developed to better serve passenger needs.
In addition, extended access facilities will be introduced, including an overhead bridge across Olcott Mawatha connecting to McCallum Road near Sampath Bank. Digital upgrades such as E-Gate systems will also be implemented to streamline passenger movement.
Deputy Minister Gunesena assured that construction work will be carried out with minimal disruption to daily train operations.
